You and I know that social media can be a great tool to get your name out there and start building a network for your business. But it’s easy to get caught up in the “social” side of social media. How often have you opened up Facebook or Twitter only to find out that a good half hour has whizzed past while you’ve been liking baby photos of someone you barely know or watching the latest funny video. It’s all well and good but it won’t get you any business.
And that half hour you spent? You’re never getting it back and you won’t get back all those other half hours you spend chatting to friends and family on Facebook or Twitter.
If you want to be successful with social media for your business, then you need to get serious about it. And that means ditching the funny videos and the chat about last night’s party, and focusing instead on what’s going to get your ideal clients through the door.
And I hate to break this to you, but getting serious results from social media is going to take more than a few likes and tweets; it’s going to take a lot of time and effort – and planning.
Because without some serious work on your part, you’re going to end up spending a lot of time and energy but not getting any results from it.
So here are 5 reasons why you you’re wasting your time with social media.
You don’t have a plan. You’ve heard that social media is a good way to promote your business but you don’t have a strategy on how you can use it to reach and engage with your ideal clients. Like any form of marketing, you need to have a plan on how to use social media to reach those people who are interested in services such as yours. Once you have a plan, you need to be regularly posting valuable and relevant content to all your social media profiles.
You’re out of date. You’re not aware of the latest updates on social media so your profile is out of date and not displaying properly. The design and set up of social media profiles on sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn is changing regularly. So if you’re not keeping up to date with these changes, then your profile will look out of date and you will be missing out on the tools that these platforms give you to promote your business effectively.
You believe the hype. Every time a new social media platform is launched, you’re front of the queue! You don’t want to miss out on the latest fad but you end up having so many profiles that you feel overwhelmed. And what happens is that you waste time trying to keep up with them all rather than focusing on those channels that will get you in front of your ideal clients. So start with no more than 2-3 social media platforms and focus on those ones where your ideal clients are likely to hang out.
You don’t have the time or skills. You try to set up a professional page on Facebook or a profile on Twitter, but you just don’t have the skills or time to do this yourself. So your profiles don’t match your overall branding and don’t reflect the message that you’re trying to get across. Let someone else set up your social media profiles for you and you can then concentrate on generating valuable content that you can share with your followers and fans.
It’s all about you. You’ve heard that social media is a good way to promote your services so you endlessly post out links about what you do but you don’t get the results you want. There’s a reason it’s called social media because you need to be interacting with your followers and fans. You can share content about what you do but don’t forget to also post relevant content from other sources, as well as interacting with your followers by asking or answering questions, thanking them for retweets and mentions etc.
So as you can see, having a plan in place of what you want to achieve with social media will help you to focus your energy on those activities that will get you in front of your ideal clients. And if you don’t have the time or skills to do it all yourself then outsource it to someone who has the skills to help you.
