Social media is about the people! Not about your business. Provide for the people and the people will provide for you – Matt Goulart
As a time-strapped entrepreneur, it’s easy to jump into social media without really thinking about how you can use it to leverage your marketing activities. As I mentioned in my previous blog – 5 Reasons Why You’re Wasting Time on Social Media – you can get caught up in the “fun” side of social media when in reality you should be focusing on how you can use it to educate people about who you are and what you do, and drive them to your website and mailing list.
So as a business owner, how can you start getting serious results from your social media?
Well there are 5 questions that you need to consider before you even create a Facebook or Google+ page or Twitter or LinkedIn profile for your business.
Think about it as if you’re building a house. You wouldn’t start building the walls until you laid the foundations, and you wouldn’t lay the foundations until you had drawn up specific floorplans on how the house will look.
Well asking the right questions before you create your social media strategy is like creating the floorplans for your house, and the answers to those questions will give you the foundations that you need to ensure that your social media activities will get your marketing message in front of your ideal clients.
These 5 questions are instrumental to the success of your social media strategy because they will help you to get clear about the type of followers and fans you need to connect with, where you can find them and the kind of content that you need to be sharing to attract their attention.
Without thinking about these questions beforehand, you are building your social media strategy on very rocky foundations. And if your social media strategy comes crashing down around you, all that will happen is that your business will end up leaking out some serious opportunities and income to your competitors.
So make yourself a cuppa, grab a pen and paper and take some time to answer these 5 simple questions that you need if you want your social media marketing to shake the rafters rather than fall flat on the floor.
Who is your ideal client?
Seriously don’t even start on social media before you’ve answered this fundamental question. Think about what your ideal client looks like and write out a short bio about them that includes their age, gender, occupation, industry, income etc.
Where do they hang out?
By knowing exactly who your ideal client is, you will know where they hang out (eg Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc) and the best way that you can reach them. This means that you won’t be wasting your time on social media platforms that aren’t aimed at those people who can help your business.
What challenges are they struggling with right now?
Once you have got a clear idea of who your ideal client is, you can start to think about what kind of issues and challenges they have in their business or industry. By having a clear idea of the type of challenges they face, you can create and share content on social media that specifically addresses those issues – and start to attract people who are looking for answers right now.
What are the common misconceptions about your services or industry?
There are misconceptions about every business’ services and they can include being too expensive, unreliable, or complicated to name just a few. By knowing what these are before you start your social media activities, you’ll be armed with the resources to tackle these misconceptions head on – breaking down any barriers that people have about working with you and showing your followers and fans that you know your stuff.
How can you best serve them?
This may be the last one but it’s no less important. Because once you know the answers to the above, then your priority is to pull all this together and think about how you can use it to best serve those people who are interested in your services. Decide on which are the best social media platforms to reach and educate your interested clients so they will be attracted to your business.
The fundamental goal of all the above is to create engaging and valuable content that addresses and answers the needs and challenges of your ideal clients in the best way for them.
By taking the time to answer these 5 questions, you will have everything you need to build a solid foundation on which to launch your social media strategy. You will know that all your social media activities are targeted at getting your message in front of those people who are interested in your services so you can start to build a network of prospects and advocates for your business.
